At the 2024 Saturn Awards, after Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard swept all its categories. A great day, indeed!

Hello, fine readers! My name is Chris, I’m a TV writer (Star Trek: Picard, The Equalizer), film & theater director, podcast co-host, and comic book writer/creator.

As a filmmaker, my work has won numerous “Best Short” awards at some of your favorite festivals. As an essayist, my online writing has appeared in Guernica.

I started THIN ICE in the early days of the 2023 WGA Strike as place to express my thoughts and dump myfeelings about that disruptive action. Now that the strike is over, but the media landscape continues to hemorrhage jobs and erect more hurdles for creative individuals, but I want this newsletter to be a place for like-minded souls and creatives to come together online to discuss our work and our mental health.

I will keep these newsletter issues short. Don’t want to take up too much of your time. I appreciate your attention.

What’s this newsletter about?

I write honest, yet a bit glib essays with distinct takeaways about what it means to be a creative in the fading Dream Factory known as Hollywood. In addition, I share recommendations, writing and directing craft advice, and anything that inspires me, and, hopefully, will inspire you as well.

My essays will cover surviving (and thriving) in the gladiator career as a career, literature, film & TV, the craft & business of screenwriting, mental health, worldwide travel, and connecting with ourselves and others.

THIN ICE is more than a newsletter: It’s a nexus for creatives to learn and expand their careers & lives.

A huge part of this newsletter is the thriving creative community: Anyone reading this is highly invested in their work, their sanity, and I hope we all will learn and become better together.

Sooner or later, I plan on launching a TV Drama Writing Online Class (for paid subscribers only), so don’t miss an issue for more details and the announcements when the limited spots open up.

Paying for your subscription also means you’re sustaining this publication and the community of readers who get something out of it.

It also means you’re investing in what you value. It means you’re supporting an artist in building a safe, inspiring, helpful space in an industry that’s about to crash and burn, and, hopefully, rise from the ashes.

Lastly, this is a space for you — so reach out. Ask questions. Send me requests. Let’s support each other as we collectively invest in our work and our mental health.

Thank you for being here!
